The People's National Party (PNP) has announced that Dr Andre Haughton has been added to the Mark Golding-led shadow cabinet.
Haughton has been appointed the party’s spokesman on commerce, technology, and innovation.
He replaces the member of parliament for St Catherine North Western, Hugh Graham, who served as the party’s spokesperson on commerce, science and technology until his resignation in April.
In a release on Wednesday, the PNP said Haughton was appointed by Golding as part of the party's ongoing commitment to promoting economic growth, technological advancement, and innovation in Jamaica.
Haughton has been the PNP's caretaker for the St James West Central constituency since January 2019 and has also served as a member of the Upper House. He was defeated by the Jamaica Labour Party’s Marlene Malahoo Forte in the 2020 general election.
“As the newly appointed shadow minister for commerce, technology, and innovation, Dr Andre Haughton will play a pivotal role in shaping policies that drive economic growth and foster innovation in Jamaica.
“His expertise in economics, combined with his deep understanding of technology and innovation, will be instrumental in guiding the party's approach to these vital sectors,” said the PNP in its release.
While expressing confidence in Haughton's abilities and leadership, the PNP said: “We are certain that his dedication, intellect, and commitment to progress will greatly benefit not only the party but also the Jamaican people as a whole."
