Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, was released from the Tower Street Adult Correctional Facility on Wednesday afternoon after the Court of Appeal overturned his murder conviction. News of his long-awaited freedom caused much fanfare on the streets of the Corporate Area as adoring fans celebrated the entertainer’s acquittal after spending more than a decade behind bars.

Kartel, along with his co-accused — Shawn ‘Shawn Storm’ Campbell, Kahira Jones, and Andre St John — had been convicted for the September 2011 murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams. Their appeal was initially dismissed by the Jamaican Court of Appeal in 2020. The men, in their last attempt at possible freedom, took their case to the Privy Council in the United Kingdom. The Privy Council, on March 14, overturned their murder convictions on the grounds of juror misconduct. The case was then sent back to Jamaica’s Court of Appeal.
