Murders down by 44.2 percent - JCF

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) is reporting a 44.2 per cent decrease in murders between January 1 and June 14 this year, compared to the same period in 2024.

“Every week, it gets better and better. Jamaica is becoming safer every single day,” declared Minister of Education, Youth, Skills, and Information, Dr Dana Morris Dixon.

Speaking at a post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House today (Wednesday, June 18), Morris Dixon stated that 240 fewer Jamaicans had lost their lives to senseless violence.

A total of 303 persons have been killed so far this year, compared to 543 individuals murdered during the same period last year.

“That’s 240 people who would not have been here but for the work of the JCF and the administration. Us getting safer and safer is important for us to celebrate as a country,” Morris Dixon emphasised.

Overall, major crimes are down by 18.8 per cent, with notable reductions in categories such as shootings, which have decreased by 32.5 per cent.

Incidents of rape also declined by 32.8 per cent, with 137 cases reported as of June 14, compared to 204 cases last year.

However, according to the JCF’s Serious Crimes Report, robberies and break-ins have increased by 2.5 per cent and 20.9 per cent, respectively, this year.

As of June 14, 325 robberies have been reported—an increase of eight cases over the corresponding period last year.

Additionally, the police recorded 509 break-ins this year, up from 421 cases in 2024.
