Digicel has announced the closure of the online news site Loop News with immediate effect, and the closure of the television station SportsMax in August.
The changes announced on Tuesday are presented as part of Digicel’s strategic shift away from being a standard media provider in a bid to reduce losses and increase profitability.
Both SportsMax and Loop have been staples in the wider Caribbean information and entertainment space for decades, with SportsMax operating from 2002 and Loop News since 2014.
Under Digicel, both of these brands were operating at a loss, with each seeing financial austerity cuts and debt reduction schemes from 2024 and into 2025.
The Digicel leadership indicated on Tuesday morning that in spite of these efforts, neither Loop nor SportsMax was viable, and so the time had come for change.
The telecommunications enterprise stated in a press release that its reoriented platform was now focused on the ‘Trend’ organisation, alongside the ‘Symptai Consulting Limited’.
Trend Media is a digital advertising and publishing platform, while Symptai, acquired by Digicel in June, focuses on cybersecurity.
The 20-year-old popular Jamaican TV show, ‘Digicel Rising Stars’, has also been cancelled as part of these massive cuts.
Digicel has stated its gratitude to the teams of both SportsMax and Loop News for their service, affirming that affected employees were informed in advance and that the process of transition will follow local labour guidelines.
