Reid, Pinnock back in court next month seeking judicial review in corruption case

Former Education Minister Ruel Reid and Caribbean Maritime University (CMU) President Professor Fritz Pinnock will return to the Supreme Court next month to seek to have the fraud charges against them quashed.

The Full Court is scheduled to hear their application for judicial review on February 10.

The hearing date was agreed on Tuesday.

This was disclosed by lead attorney Hugh Wildman, who said that a three member panel of judges will hear the application.

Chief Justice Bryan Sykes rejected the application last month.

Mr. Wildman said the law gives him the right to renew the application before the Full Court where a panel will hear the arguments.

Mr. Wildman said that he decided against appealing the Chief Justice's ruling.

The Full Court will be asked to quash the decision of the Financial Investigations Division (FID) and the Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigations Branch (C-TOC) to charge Mr. Reid and Professor Pinnock in the Ministry of Education/CMU affair.

Mr. Wildman contends that the FID was not empowered by law to bring the charges against them.

In his 31-page judgment, the Chief Justice argued that the attorneys failed to convince him or present evidence as to why the matter must go before the Supreme Court.

Mr. Reid, Professor Pinnock and the other accused in the case are scheduled to appear before the St. Andrew Parish Court on Thursday where the case will be mentioned.
