The West Indies turned in a very good all-round display, beating England by 30 runs in their second match of the ICC T20 World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium in India on Wednesday.
West Indies made 196-6 from their 20 overs with Player-of-the-match Sherfane Rutheford hitting a splendid 76 not out and bowled England out for 166 as Gudakesh Motie took 3-33.
The West Indies, with their second win, moved to a maximum of 4 points at the top of Group C. England and Scotland are on 2 points, with Italy and Nepal pointless. Both are in action tomorrow.
England won the toss and asked the West Indies to take first strike, and the decision by Harry Brooks seemed justified as they struck twice early, removing Shai Hope for a duck with the score on 8-1 then Brandon King for one at 8-2.
But Shimron Hetmyer and Roston Chase steadied the innings with a 47-run partnership before Hetmyer went for 23 runs from 12 balls, stoking two fours and two sixes with a strike rate of 191 per cent. Chase went for 34, inclusive of six fours at 77-4.
But Rutherford and Rovman Powell put on 51 runs for the fifth wicket before Powell was dismissed for 14. Rutherford never relented, and he hit seven sixes and two fours and propelled the West Indies to a decent 196-6.
Bowling for England, Jamie Overton took 2-33, Adil Rashid grabbed 2-16 from four overs, and Sam Curran got 1-36.
England started well in the reply and lost their first wicket at 38 when Phil Salt tried to hit Shepherd straight down the ground but lobbed the ball to Rutherford at mid off for 30. He hit four fours and two sixes and threatened to steal the game away from the West Indies.
Jos Buttler went for 21 at 74-2, and the innings slowly collapsed under some very good bowling and fielding by the West Indies. Sam Curran top scored with 43 with three fours and two sixes, batting at number five.
Guyanese left-arm spinner Motie captured 3-33 and was ably supported by Roston Chase with 2-29. Shamar Joseph, Akeal Hosein and Romario Shepherd took a wicket apiece.
West Indies will next be in action against Nepal on Sunday, while England will face Scotland in a crucial encounter on Saturday.
