Local Govt Elections set to be postponed...again

The government is moving to further postpone local government elections which were due to be held by next month.
A Bill entitled The Representation of  the People (Postponement of  Elections to Municipal Corporations and City Municipalities) Act 2022 is to be tabled in the House of  Representatives Tuesday afternoon.

Last November Prime Minister Andrew Holness said he was not in favour of  calling local government elections  as the country was still dealing with the covid-19 pandemic.

Amendments to temporarily modify the Representation of  the People Act, to allow the local government elections to be pushed back to no later than February 27, 2022 were approved in Parliament in November 2020.

The last local government general election was held on November 28, 2016, which means the municipal bodies have already exceeded their normal three-year term of office by more than two years.
