PNP in Trouble: Poll Finds the Party is Struggling to Attract New Voters

Pollster, Don Anderson, says the Opposition People’s National Party is finding it difficult to attract new voters to the party.

His comments come following the latest RJR/Don Anderson polls which finds a 13% lead for the governing Jamaica Labour Party over the Opposition.

The new polling data shows that despite widespread concerns regarding the cost of living and crime, the JLP has seen a 5-point increase in its favourability, while the PNP has only increased by a percentage point over last year.

Speaking on Cliff Hughes Online on Nationwide Radio on Tuesday, Mr. Anderson said despite the slight increase in favourability for the PNP and its leader, Mark Golding, the party has not been able to translate that into actual voter support.

Mr. Golding has conceded that his party is trailing the governing Jamaica Labour Party, JLP, in the national polls.

But he says the trajectory is in the party’s favour. He’s urging PNP supporters to come out and vote at the pending Local Government polls.

Don Anderson says in addition to not attracting new voters, the PNP is also seeing a decline in the support of its core base of older voters.

Political commentators say the difficulty the PNP is facing in increasing its base of support is partly to be blamed for the party standings in the polls.
