The American Dream Dies!!!!!

Major upset as the Netherlands beat the U.S., 3-1, after goals by Memphis Depay in the 10th minute and Daley Blind in the closing seconds of the first half. Hadj Wright scored for the U.S. in the 76th minute before Denzel Dumfries added a goal for the Netherlands in the 81st minute

The wait for a U.S. victory in the knockout rounds of the World Cup continues. Twenty years on from the Americans' last appearance in the quarterfinals of this tournament, they've been eliminated again in the round of 16--just as they were in 2010 and 2014.

Ultimately, the U.S. was out-coached by a manager who knew exactly what the Netherlands needed to do to stay in control of this match. Though the U.S. created early pressure--and will rue the miss from Pulisic in the third minute--the unorthodox Dutch system effectively contained the Americans for most of the evening. And by the time the U.S. woke up, they were already in a 2-0 hole.

Haji Wright's goal did offer a glimmer of hope, but by that point, the U.S. had gone to pieces at the back. Denzel Dumfries found himself completely unmarked for the Netherlands' third goal. And so the Dutch will advance to the quarters where they await the winner of tonight's game between Argentina and Australia.

The Americans, meanwhile, are going home. And just like that, the fans wearing orange erupt after the Netherlands' two-goal lead is restored. Defender Denzel Dumfries put that one home into the corner of the net, and with the score at 3-1, expect an all out blitz here from the Americans. They already have a four-forward attack in to try and pull off an improbable comeback, The American dream is no more for USA in the worldcup.
