St. Ann mother charged for dumping baby in latrine, but St. Mary mother not yet charged for same act
A St. Ann woman is now presently before the St. Ann Parish court answering to a charge of cruelty to a child.
The accused, Aitlyn Cole, of a Hesse Cassel district address, allegedly gave birth to a baby girl, who was later rescued from a pit latrine by firefighters in St. Ann.
Jamaica Times was informed that the woman reported to the Alexandria police station on Wednesday where subsequently charged with cruelty to a child.
"The female in St. Ann turned herself in on Wednesday, she went to court yesterday and is in court now. She has been charged with cruelty to a child," a representative of the Corporate Communication Unit told Jamaica Times.
Allegations in court are that the child was heard crying in the community of Hesse Cassel. She was later removed from the pit latrine and taken to a hospital. The child's mother reportedly fled investigators before turning herself in this week.
In the meantime, the St Mary police have not charged the mother whose infant child was dumped in a pit latrine in Cox Piece, St Mary.
"The lady in St. Mary who is suspected of dumping her baby was in the hospital, but we're not sure she has been discharged yet as they were evaluating her as she has post partum depression. She has not been charged but the file has been sent to the DPP for ruling," a CCU representative revealed.
The two separate cases of child abandonment in a pit latrine occurred within a few days of each other.
