Mayberry Strong: Powering the 2025 Mayberry Gymnastics Classics & National Trials

The 2025 staging of the Mayberry Gymnastics Classics & National Trials took place November 29–30 at the Jamaica College Auditorium, bringing together a record field of junior and senior gymnasts from across the island. Over two days of compulsory, optional and pre-competitive sessions, the meet featured Levels 1–9, J1–J3 and PC Senior A and B, with strong showings from clubs including Jamaica School of Gymnastics, Portmore Gymnastics, First Dance Studios, Stoic Gymnaszo, NISHIDA’S GYM, Academic Flippers, Westmoreland Gym and Gymnastics For All.

At the official launch of this year’s Classic, held ahead of competition, Desiree Wheeler, Marketing Manager at Mayberry Investments Ltd, highlighted the firm’s role as associate sponsor and its commitment to investing in the dreams and potential of young athletes across the Caribbean. According to Wheeler,“the championships were more than a meet. They are a celebration of dedication, teamwork and excellence, and we salute the gymnasts, their families, coaches and our partner sponsors such as Supreme Ventures Limited (SVL) for helping to build a nurturing environment where they can grow and reach their full potential.”

Speaking on behalf of Supreme Ventures Limited, Assistant Vice President of PR & Corporate Affairs, Chloleen Daley-Muschett, echoed that sentiment, noting that “Supreme Ventures bets on potential and has proudly supported gymnastics in Jamaica for years through our partnership with the Jamaica Olympic Association. We know our support gives these young gymnasts the confidence and platform to perform and showcase what they have spent months training for. Many for the first time in front of a large audience, on their journey towards future Olympic dreams”.

On the competition floor, the 2025 edition of the Classic delivered some of the event’s deepest fields to date, with multiple all-around scores clearing 35.000 across the various levels and divisions. Standout compulsory and pre-competitive performances included a 38.250 all-around from Rashida Lawrence of NISHIDA’S GYM to top Level 2 Junior B, as well as a commanding 38.500 from Portmore Gymnastics’ Jazmine Brown to secure the Women’s PC Senior A crown. In PC Senior B, Jamaica School of Gymnastics’ Krishna Ffrench edged a tightly packed field with 37.800, just ahead of a 37.100 tie for second by Portmore’s Adriel Pryce and Shantae Brown, while teammate Viera-Dyani Johnson closed out the podium places with 36.950. Across the women’s Level 6 Senior B category, Westmoreland Gym’s athletes also impressed, led by Mariecia Robinson’s winning 34.800 all-around ahead of teammate Haley Allison Francis on 33.600.

The junior programme once again proved a major highlight, particularly in the J1 and J2 divisions where First Dance Studios and Stoic Gymnaszo stacked the upper ranks. In J1, Makenzie O’reggio of First Dance Studios posted 28.250 to take the all-around ahead of a crowded field of young debutants, while in J2, teammate Jenneilia Grant produced a sharp 29.700 to top the standings, chased closely by Stoic’s Zinovia Getten on 28.850 and Ja School of Gymnastics’ Angeanna Hammond on 28.700. Throughout the weekend, several athletes registered event scores in the high 9s and near-perfect routines, reinforcing the technical progress being made at club level and the increasing competitiveness of our Jamaican gymnastics.

With strong backing from Supreme Ventures, Mayberry Investments and other partners, organizers and sponsors stressed that the Classic is as much about building a pathway as it is about medals, giving local gymnasts consistent exposure to a high-standard, multi-club meet on home soil. As the Mayberry Gymnastics Classics & National Trials closes this staging at Jamaica College, stakeholders are looking ahead to further growth in participation, more international interest and, ultimately, more Jamaican gymnasts progressing from this stage to regional and global podiums in the years to come.

Seahawk Soars to Victory at 14th Latvian Independence Regatta in Kingston Harbour

Seahawk, skippered by Rugie Misir, powered through brisk, gusting conditions to claim first place in a corrected time (after handicap) of 74.6 minutes to lift the prestigious Ian “Gibbo” Gibson Trophy at the 14th Latvian Independence Regatta 2025, held December 7 in Kingston Harbour.

Adding to the distinction of the winning vessel, Her Excellency Marianne Ziss, Ambassador to France, sailed aboard Seahawk during today’s race, lending further international significance to the event.

The annual regatta—now a marquee fixture on Jamaica’s sporting and diplomatic calendar—was conceived in 2011 by Robert ScottHonorary Consul General of the Republic of Latvia to Jamaica and Chief Executive Officer of Lifespan Distribution Ltd. Since its inception, the event has evolved into a unique blend of sport and diplomacy.

Jamaica remains the only country in the world to celebrate a nation’s independence through yacht racing and surfing competitions, making the Latvian Independence Regatta a one-of-a-kind international sporting observance.

Competing in strong winds and demanding conditions across Kingston Harbour, the fleet delivered a thrilling contest. Blue J, skippered by Andrew Thwaites, a multiple-time regatta champion, secured second place with a corrected time of 74.87 minutes , while Jazz, under Stephen Facey, claimed third place with corrected time of 76.19 minutes to complete the podium.

Commenting on her experience aboard the winning yacht, Ambassador Ziss stated:

“France has an established sailing tradition; sailing was part of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. I thank the Honorary Consul General for his invitation today and hope to develop exchanges around sailing between France and Jamaica.”

The celebrations continue with the Surfing Competition, scheduled for Sunday, December 14, at Peenie Wallie Point in Buff Bay, Portland, in association with the Jamaica Surfing Association, further reinforcing the regatta’s role as a platform for international sporting and cultural exchange.
