The Chelsea star scored his side's third goal in first half stoppage time, finishing off a Harry Kane cross with a brilliant volley into the goal. He also registered an assist on the day in an all-around strong display by England.
Sterling featured for England at the two previous World Cups, in Brazil (2014) and Russia (2018), but failed to score on both occasions.
A native of Maverley in St Andrew, Sterling is the first Jamaican footballer to score a goal at the tournament since Theodore “Tappa” Whitmore at the 1998 World Cup in France.
