The Vector Control Unit of the Kingston and St. Andrew Health Department is intensifying its call for Jamaicans to take action against mosquitoes as it hosts a World Mosquito Day Expo on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at Nelson Mandela Park, Half Way Tree from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Being held under the theme, “Taking Action Together: Building Mosquito-Resilient Communities,” the expo will bring health education and services directly to the public while highlighting the critical role communities play in reducing mosquito breeding and protecting public health.
Members of the public will benefit from free health checks, including blood pressure, blood sugar, blood cholesterol and body mass index (BMI) assessments, as well as HIV testing. Participants will also benefit from educational sessions focused on mosquito prevention and control.
The expo serves as a reminder that effective mosquito control begins at home and requires collective action. Residents are encouraged to eliminate stagnant water and potential breeding sites around their homes, businesses and communities.
Mr. Glenroy Chambers, Acting Deputy Chief Public Health Inspector, Kingston and St. Andrew Health Department, said, “Mosquito control is not the responsibility of the health authorities alone. Every household, business and community has a role to play. Simple actions, such as disposing garbage bags properly, can make a significant difference in reducing mosquito breeding.”
The vector control team is urging residents to use the World Mosquito Day Expo as an opportunity to get informed, get screened and take action to protect themselves, their families and their communities.
