The South East Regional Health Authority (SERHA) will enhance its healthcare service delivery with the operationalization of three new x-ray units at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) by the end of October 2023.

The arrival of the shipments of X-ray machines follows a contract signing between SERHA and Arel Limited to supply, install and maintain a total of six X-ray machines at a cost of J$453,448,559.67. The first shipment of machines was delivered late September 2023.

The Bustamante Hospital for Children, Spanish Town Hospital and the National Chest Hospital are also to receive one new machine under the agreement.

The machines will, according to Mr. Errol Greene, Regional Director, SERHA, reduce the waiting time for patients who enter the hospital with conditions that require scans. The X-ray machine is able to take scans at 360-degree angles and has different heights and features to accommodate specific injuries.

Mr. Wentworth Charles, Board Chairman, SERHA, said that this contract, valued at over $400 million for the installation and supply of the six X-ray machines, will significantly reduce the waiting time and enhance the diagnostic services offered at our health institutions. He added that a maintenance and repair policy is also put in place.

Ms. Jacqueline Hancel, Service Manager, Arel Limited, said that the other shipment of the three remaining X-ray machines is expected to be delivered in the months of October and November 2023. She was speaking during the delivery of the second shipment of two X-ray machines to KPH yesterday, (September 27, 2023). The other three x-ray machines will be installed by the end of November 2023.

SERHA, which is the largest of the four Regional Health Authorities will continue to promote and safeguard the health of the Jamaican people in collaboration with individuals, group and agencies through the provision and monitoring of cost-effective preventive, curative, promotive and rehabilitative services delivered by adequately trained and motivated personnel.
