Holness in the US for 'Don' talks

Prime Minister Andrew Holness left the island for Washington on Tuesday to hold talks with the relevant authorities in the United States in a bid to get better cooperation on identifying and dealing with individuals in the North American country who continue to influence crime and violence in Jamaica.

The male student who was charged with the fatal stabbing of his 16-year-old William Knibb Memorial High schoolmate, Kamal Hall, and who pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of manslaughter last month, was sentenced to four years and 10 months in prison when he appeared in the St James Circuit Court on Monday.

Commissioner of Police, Major General Anthony Anderson says the reimposition of the states of emergency (SOEs) in several parishes was necessary after an increase in murders following the expiration of the emergency measure last week.

SOE's are back - St Ann added to the list

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has announced the reimposition of states of public emergency (SOEs) in Clarendon, St Catherine, St James, Westmoreland, Hanover and sections of Kingston and St Andrew.

The Houston Police said that Patrick Xavier Clark, 33, was being charged with murder, and that Takeoff had been an “innocent bystander.”

Three shot, one fatally, in St. Mary

Three people were shot, one fatally, during an attack by a gunman in Stewart Town, St. Mary on Thursday evening.
 
The deceased has been identified as 35-year-old Martin Scott, otherwise called Bobo, a craft vendor of Huddersfield in the parish and Exchange, St. Ann.
 
A 44-year-old woman and 59-year-old man are in hospital.
 
About 7:30 p.m., patrons were at a corner bar, when a man armed with a gun approached and fired shots, hitting the three.
 
Mr. Scott died at the scene.
Three members of a criminal group, who used a religious charity as a front to import 400 kilograms of cannabis valued at £2 million from Jamaica into the UK, six years ago, have been convicted.
Human rights group Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) says the section in the proposed Bail Act that allows for pre-charge bail should be removed as it could breach constitutional rights.
